Management Information System (MIS)

The advent of information technology has virtually merged geographical boundaries within which an organization works. Now every business initiative is bound to affect or get affected by trends in the world economy. In such a scenario, it becomes important for the management to be well-informed about all the happenings and take decisions after taking into consideration all kinds of minute information.

Management Information System (MIS)Moreover, the use of computers for all business operations has also changed the modus operandi. Now, the way data is handled and retrieved plays a very important role in establishing a well-organized and a well-coordinated organization system.

To help organizations meet these challenges, a branch of study called Management Information Systems (MIS) is developed. It is taken up as a course in all management courses and is designed primarily for a general management student and not a technical guy. This course is mainly taken up in the first-year of a two-year management program. Besides, it is also an essential component of management executive programs.

MIS helps in establishing information systems that organize a plethora of data thereby enabling easy data retrieval to facilitate quick decision-making. In a management school, a typical MIS course touches upon the fundamentals of MIS, its importance, types, and applications. It also focuses upon the basic knowledge of computer hardware, software, and telecommunication technologies. Besides, how to use Internet as a potent tool in designing or using an information system is also taken up in an MIS class.

The learning objective of the course is to enable students identify and use information technology for personal career growth as well as for taking effective and accurate managerial decisions. Students also get an insight into the technology required to implement each type of MIS. It is an important learning component especially for those students who want to specialize in information technology.

Textbook reading is essential for this course because of the plethora of jargon and concepts with which students have to familiarize themselves in order to move to the advanced levels of learning. Moreover, practical sessions in the computer lab to help students develop basic computing skills are an important part of this course.

Overall, the teaching methodology is lecture-based supported with case studies to understand the practical relevance of MIS. A project focusing on the implementation of an information system is also taken up usually as a group work. Sometimes students are taken to an organization to show them how an information system coordinates different work activities.
