Human Resource Management
Human Resource Management, commonly known as HR, is an area of specialization in the study of management courses. Many people consider staffing as an HR function. It is partially wrong. HR is a broad function that starts from planning for the human resource, identifying job positions, defining every job’s roles and responsibilities, laying down the hierarchy, recruitment, training and development, etc. Therefore, staffing is only a component of HR.
Looking at the mammoth task of an HR role, the subject is studied systematically in all business schools. The teaching methodology is a combination of lectures, team projects, case studies, summer training, and assignment. HR students learn about the basics of HR such as the importance of HR, process of conducting performance appraisals and interviews, how to identify training needs and create training programs, etc. they also learn about the nitty-gritty of making various documents such as psychology tests, questionnaires, and aptitude test that play an essential role in choosing right people for the right job.
HR is ideal for students who have a penchant to read human minds and like to interact with people. An HR person should have effective communication skills and a good personality. He should be good at making reports and presenting in an appropriate manner. The HR curriculum focuses on all such areas and aim at preparing students for this role.
An HR department is the repertoire of information of all the employees of an organization. Hence, the job demands high level of commitment on the part of its people to maintain the required confidentiality. Through discussions and case studies, management teachers work upon inculcating the right values for the job.
Like in other courses, HR students take up summer-training in the HR department of any organization. They get a real-hand experience of how to coordinate with different people and keep a track of communication with them. Apart from this, they choose themselves or are given an identified learning area on which they have to work for 2-3 months. Students then have to present a consolidated report on their study to other students and their teachers.
The HR field has large employment opportunities because all organizations have an HR department. To fetch a job, the student must have a thorough understanding of all the concepts, should be well-versed with current happenings, and be a pleasing personality. Besides, he should also be prepared with his summer-training details and learning.
